Travel

Bethesda, Maryland is served by 3 local airports in the surrounding area, Reagan National Airport (DCA), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). Amtrak (WAS) is also available. Washington's Union Station is one of Amtrak's busiest stations and is a major stop for all train services.

Driving to NIH

When driving to NIH, plan 30-45 minutes of extra time to get through the security checkpoints at the visitor entrances to campus. Be aware that visitor parking lots on the NIH campus fill up quickly. Consider taking public transportation (described below) as an alternative.

NIH Visitor Gateway Center

Visitors must enter through the NIH Gateway Center. Information about visitor parking, non-commercial vehicle inspection and visitor ID processing is available here.

Parking Information

Visitor Parking is extremely difficult to find at NIH, so if at all possible, take public transportation. There is a Metro station on the NIH campus with shuttle bus service to the main buildings, including Natcher Building 45 where the Postdoc Workshop will be held. Short-term, metered parking and long term, attendant-controlled parking are available to visitors at a cost of $2 per hour for the first three hours or $12 per day.

Public Transportation

Metrorail service is available from Washington's National Airport and from Union Station (Amtrak railway). Several of the recommended hotels for this Workshop are also near the Metro.

To get to the NIH campus: Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center Station. The station's escalators exit onto the NIH campus. The NIH Visitor Gateway will be straight ahead. After going through the Visitor Gateway, follow the signs to Natcher, Building 45. You may also take the NIH campus shuttle - NIH Campus Shuttle Routes
